In K:A:D, what "A" means?

Assists when you kill an enemy together or capture a location?
Sometimes it doesnt counts in either situation.

I believe it means when you hit and damage an enemy but someone else kills them.

What it means, is you were directing damage towards that person but another teammate actually killed that player. So you assisted your teammate in taking that player down.
